Postpartum

Postpartum can look vastly different for every mom and even pregnancy to pregnancy. How and where you give birth can change what you may need postpartum. However there are some essentials you will need regardless. It can be incredibly overwhelming as a first time mom to know what you need and don’t need.

Vaginal & Cesarean Birth Necessities

Large Pads - no matter what kind of birth you have, you will experience bleeding

Disposable Underwear - disposable underwear can be a replacement for pads if they are more comfortable

Peri Bottle - no matter what kind of birth you have it can ease pain and discomfort

Reusable Breast Pads - even if you are not breastfeeding you can experience leaking

Comfy PJ’s & lounge clothes - I mean who doesn’t want to be comfy postpartum

Tucks Pads - regardless of your birth, you may experience pain or discomfort and these are handy to have on hand

Nipple Balm - even if you are not breastfeeding, you can experience discomfort and a good nipple balm can help

Water Bottle - it is incredibly important to hydrate during pregnancy, labor and into the postpartum period

Stool Softener - regardless of your birth, stool softeners can help any discomforts going to the restroom

Prenatal vitamins - making sure you have the essential nutrients to heal is incredibly important

Vaginal Birth

Numbing Spray - you may not need it but it can be handy to have on hand just in case

Sitz Bath - these can help soothe irritation on or around the perineum

Cesarean Recovery

Belly Binder - these can be used after a vaginal birth as well, however they can provide a lot of great support after a c-section

Scar Cream - this isn’t something that can be used right away, however it can be a great idea to use later on in postpartum

High Waisted Underwear - while not essential, they can be amazing to ease discomfort and add a layer of protection to your incision area

While these are all physical things, there are a few simple ways to ensure you have an easier postpartum period. Hiring a postpartum doula can be a big help even if it is only for a few short periods. She can provide advice and information to help you further.

Give yourself grace

While postpartum can be challenging, it can also be a beautiful and pivotal time. Everyone will have a different experience postpartum and that is okay. Remembering to give yourself grace is the biggest thing for many people. Remember you are not alone, you are a wonderful mother and YOU are exactly what your baby needs.
