Self-Care in the Seasons of Motherhood: Tips for Every Mom
It is too easy this time of year to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and find yourself drained and running on E. While we always do our best, there are some quick ways we can ensure we are well cared for and not feeling too much stress this season.
1.Take a hot/warm bath
Even if it is a quick 15 minute soak, it can be a game changer for relaxing your body and mind. Remember if you are pregnant to watch the water temperature but is it still very safe to take warm baths.
2. Read a book
Again, even if it is just a few pages, it is better than none! This can be harder if you have little ones, however we all typically have smart phones and I have found myself easily able to read books on my phone or on my kindle. Find an easy read that you enjoy and try to read a chapter a day.
3. Take a nap
I know this one can be harder and easier said than done. But even getting a few minutes to rest your eyes and reset your mind and body can be helpful. If you can, just kicking back in a chair outside in the sun can be beneficial. Allowing your body to rest and absorb the benefits of the outdoors can truly be a game changer.
4. Engage in your hobbies
We often find ourselves being absorbed in day to day tasks, work, household chores, kids schedules, etc. It can be helpful to find a small hobby that is just yours! Find something that YOU enjoy doing and do it! It can be hard and some may even feel guilty but having something for yourself can also be a great feeling and way to unwind.
5. Get a massage
I mean who doesn’t want a massage? These can be harder to coordinate and may not happen as often as we would like, however they can be HUGE resets for the mind and body.
6. Journaling
Most of the time by the end of the day we just want to go to sleep, trust me, because same. However, taking just 5 minutes before bed to write in a journal can be so helpful for easing your mind right before you want to rest. It not only clears your mind but can put you at ease. Not sure what to journal? That's okay, it could be as simple as a gratitude list or as complex as writing letters to a “friend” each night about your day and your thoughts you had.
7. Meditation
Many people see meditation as sitting for hours on a rug in a quiet room. However, that's not the case. Simple meditation can be done in a few minutes wherever you are. Sit back, relax, clear your mind and just be. Or you can try a simple meditation track to guide you there. Again, there are many that are just 5-10 minutes so you can do these right before bed or before you start your day in the morning.
8. Schedule breaks from screens
This can be a hard one however it can be easily applied. Instead of scrolling instagram for an hour before bed try reading a book, journaling, playing a card game with your family, sitting outdoors, etc. It can be hard at first however, after the habit is broke, it will be easy and you will find yourself more relaxed and more present with your family.
9. Get outside
I started to talk about this one already, however, I want to make a point to say, regardless of the weather, just a few minutes outside each day can be helpful. If you live in a colder region, try just 15 minutes during the warmest part of the day. The outdoors has many health benefits for not just you but the entire family. Bundle up properly and do what you can to breathe in some of the cool winter air.
10. Yoga
Last but not least and my all time favorite self care… YOGA. I personally love to do yoga. There are many different types of yoga to fit what you need. If you are looking to just relax there are classes for you, or if you want a complex workout, there are classes for you too. Finding a local studio is great or there are many great online classes you can do from the comfort of your own home.
These are just a few ideas to practice self care this season. Whatever self care you can do I urge you to take the time for yourself. Filling your cup will support your body mentally and physically to avoid decreased energy and burn out. We all want to make the most of our holidays, so make sure you can do that!
