Breastfeeding Breakdown: Nursing vs. pumping
National Breastfeeding Week
In honor of National Breastfeeding week I figured it would be appropriate to chat about some simple breastfeeding knowledge. Many mothers will have their own preferences and opinions on this and that is okay. What works for one mom may not work for another and vice versa. Breastfeeding can be done by nursing or by pumping milk and bottle feeding. Both can have pros and cons in different scenarios. Breastfeeding can come with ease to some and may be challenging for others. If you are struggling it is always recommended to seek the help of an IBCLC in your area.
Collecting Colostrum
Breast milk whether pumped or nursing can provide your baby with powerful antibodies that not only boost their immune system now but also in the future. Your body begins to prepare for breastfeeding early on in your second trimester. After your baby is born your body will begin to provide colostrum for your newborn. This can also be called “liquid gold” as it has an amazing amount of nutrients. If you begin leaking in your third trimester you can collect and save this colostrum. However, lactation can help induce labor and it is best to consult your healthcare provider before doing so.
Consult an Ibclc
If you are struggling to nurse you should consult an IBCLC for help as they can provide you with education, resources and support so you can achieve your goals for you and your baby. A great tool you can try is a nipple shield. Sometimes these can help your baby latch better or can help if you are experiencing pain.
Pumping
Pumping can look very different from mom to mom. Some moms may only pump occasionally or may pump full time. Every situation and circumstance will be different. There are also many different kinds of pumps as well. There are manual pumps, standard electric pumps and wearables. A manual pump is pumped by hand. An electric pump will typically need to be plugged into a wall during usage or to charge and will have tubes to the flanges for suction. A wearable pump is battery powered and can be worn in a bra so you can go about your day to day activities while pumping.
You are doing great
This is the simplest breakdown of breastfeeding. What works for one mom may be different for another. Some great tools to have regardless is a good nipple butter and a nursing cover if desired. Whether you are pumping or nursing a good nipple butter can help you avoid any extra pain. Some mothers may not want a cover while others may desire it and no matter how you are breastfeeding it can be beneficial to help you be more comfortable on your journey. Whether you breastfeed for a week or 3 years you are doing great!
If you are struggling, again, I always recommend consulting an IBCLC. You are not alone on your journey and no matter what, you are a great mom!
